The Osvaldo Borsani chairs for Fratelli Turri represent an extraordinary and rare testament to 1950s Italian design, a golden age where the high craftsmanship of Brianza met the modernist vision of great architects.
Although the industrial fame of Osvaldo Borsani is universally linked to the founding of the Tecno brand (with famous pieces such as the P40 armchair or the D70 sofa), his collaboration with Mobilificio Fratelli Turri in Carugo gave life to highly refined, high-end furnishings produced in limited editions.
Characteristics of Borsani-Turri furniture and chairs
The projects created by Borsani for the Turri company in the 1950s are distinguished by a perfect fusion of Mid-Century Modern aesthetics and luxury cabinetry:
  • Fine materials: The structures of the chairs and matching tables use noble woods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut.
  • Metallic details: Constant presence of brass ferrules and slender connecting elements.
  • Sculptural lines: Shaped backrests with clean yet enveloping geometries, typical of the post-war organic style.
  • Refined upholstery: Seats covered in velvet, silk, or textured fabrics in tones typical of the era (such as teal green, mustard yellow, or antique pink).
The context: Complete Dining Sets
In most cases, on the vintage market and at international auctions, these chairs do not appear in isolation but are part of monumental dining sets. Borsani in fact designed entire rooms for Turri that included:
  1. Dining tables: Often with imposing tops in precious marble (such as pink Portuguese marble) supported by geometric wooden structures and brass details.
  2. Sideboards and Buffets: Large matching sideboards in rosewood or polished mahogany, featuring onyx inserts or finely integrated mirrors

Osvaldo Borsani — 1940s1980s

Italian

Mid-Century Modern

Osvaldo Borsani (19111985) was one of the most multifaceted and visionary figures of twentieth-century Italian design. Born into an artistic family, he grew up immersed in the artisanal culture of Brianza. After graduating in architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1937, he developed understated luxury furniture in rare woods and brass through the family workshop ABV (Arredamenti Borsani Varedo). In 1953, he founded Tecno with his brother Fulgenzio, bringing quality design to mass production: the P40 armchair (1954), the D70 sofa (1954), and the P126 executive chair (1966) were born. His pieces are in the permanent collections of the MoMA in New York and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
